Our Story

The Taurus companies are comprised of Taurus Development Group (TDG), Taurus Renovation & Construction (TRC) and Taurus Property Management Group (TPMG).  Each Taurus company works independently and supports the mission of each of the others.  TDG acquires under developed properties, plans the development process, obtains the entitlements and then oversees their construction and completion.  TDG has a 30 year history of turnkey development projects from single family to large mixed use projects.

TRC is the construction arm of the Taurus Companies.  We serve government clients to manage their projects, renovate their spaces or consult as needed to ensure quality control is in place at all stages.  We also undertake energy efficiency projects for residential and commercial properties, install solar arrays for ground or roof top locations.  One of our key lines of business is design/build where are in house experts in design and construction collaborate to achieve high quality design that uses cutting edge technology that meets the design aesthetic and practical needs of the client.

TPMG manages multifamily and mixed use properties on behalf of its clients.  We use our unique skills from development to construction to ensure that properties are maintained and operating at maximum efficiency.

The Beginning:

Founded in 1987 by local resident Gail Montplaisir, LEED AP®, Taurus Development Group (TDG) and Taurus Renovation and Construction (TRC) are part of the Taurus Group of Companies.  In 1989 Gail was the General Contractor for a lovely project in American University Heights where she met Architect, Norman K. Smith.  During and after their collaboration on this project, they became a solid team that has worked together on myriad projects through the region.  Husband and wife, they know how to manage the personal and the business which makes them a great team and great employers.  Taurus continues to develop and build multi-family, mixed use and single-family residential award winning projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.  Taurus collaborates with professionals and organizations throughout the region to bring energy efficient, sustainable elements to all of their work including work serving hundreds of low income families and small businesses throughout the Metropolitan Area.

Revitalizing DC:

We have actively participated in the District’s revitalization in residential and commercial development, renovation, and construction, condominium conversion, new construction; and the development and construction of restaurants and waterside communities. In 1990, we concluded that urban infill and revitalization should take priority over expanding the suburbs further and further from urban job centers and public transportation.  DC had a very limited downtown residential life and many communities still suffered blight from past challenges.  Residents steadfastly protected their families and neighborhoods from  deterioration but help was needed to bring life back to abandoned buildings.  Taurus saw the need and enthusiastically began moving into new areas, acquiring vacant buildings and bringing them, not only, up to code, but creating lively, beautiful homes to bring residents back to the community.

A history of success

Past condominium projects include niche market, luxury buildings such as The Madeleine; The Navarre; The Lofts at Meridian Hill; Belmont Overlook; City Overlook; Lofts 11 and 1123 11 Lofts.  Current projects include The Sage on Belmont and Bearden Arts in the H Street Corridor.  Each building is a unique architectural design aesthetic.  We believe that our nation’s capital and its residents deserve fine, unique buildings that define our neighborhoods and the values of its residents.

ATLAS DISTRICT MOVE / HEADQUARTERS

In 2008 Taurus moved to the Atlas District and opened DC’s second incubator space in the H Street Greenhouse at 1341 H Street, NE.  Taurus became an anchoring business for the neighborhood bringing in office tenants, popular retail eating spots, Bullfrog Bagel and Star & Shamrock.  Our headquarters are undergoing expansion to include more retail, office and now residences.  Follow our project!

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

In 2009, TDG partnered with Goodwill and University of the District of Columbia to develop curriculum and conduct green collar job training courses in weatherization, energy auditing, and construction.   Starting in 2010 Taurus has been partnering with United Communities Against Poverty to create and implement the first BPI curriculum training for members of the most vulnerable populations.  We now have longstanding community partnerships with UCAP, UPO, Loudoun County Department of Family Services and Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission.  We are also a Technical Partner with Enterprise Communities and a member of the Project Management Institute.  Gail holds a 10,000 Small Businesses Certificate of Entrepreneurship.
