Madison County

Located in Madison County, Virginia, our clients started with a farm house surrounded by gardens and forest that had received many additions but still left much to be desired. With door heights of barely 6 feet and small rooms with few windows, the owners yearned for open space and gallery walls to hang their art collection, and, room for their dogs to settle in. Norman designed the project with the owners as a design-bid-build project. Taurus was the selected contractor. While this was not a design/build from the outset, the daily site reviews led to an extraordinary collaborate among clients, architect and contractor that pushed the project to new levels.

Starting as a kitchen renovation to provide the ultimate kitchen for a gourmet cook and cookbook author, this project had our team work closely with our client to meet their circulation requirements between interior and exterior and to accommodate their frequent entertainment needs, ranging from small, intimate dinners to large feasts with family and friends. As our clients’ needs change over time, we keep a global picture in mind even as we “tweak” spaces such as powder rooms, hallways, kitchens and dining rooms to accommodate those needs!

This project was among our first second floor additions to a traditional ranch style home. The home becomes one with the hill which it is perched atop. Small rooms were opened to each other to maximize space and use for the entire family. A design/build project, this home is perfect for a growing family.

This family home was renovated over time by the owners. Craftsman in original style, the updated design used a modern vernacular to repeat classic design elements such as crown molding, wainscoting, and terraces to the garden with lovely pergolas. The renovated home is now equipped with an in-law suite and home office.

This project presented us with the classic design/build challenge; a growing family with full lives and a need for space, but with limitations on lot size, resources and time. We worked together with our busy clients to create the ideal space for their growing family.

When close friends of Gail started talking about the need for a “real kitchen,” she was fully on board. When they brought architect Norman Smith in to create the perfect space, Gail, though originally skeptical, saw the huge value brought by having an architect integrate the new with the existing. Using color, space, light and exquisite design, this gem of a renovation solidified this long-term collaboration that continues today. Now, the clients, Gail, and Norman remain lifelong friends.

Our design/build skillsets often provide the solution to a myriad of construction problems; structural, space, and aesthetics. Our clients needed a garage space with a study over the garage. Given the location, our experts designed a beautiful structure of steel beams that could establish space for garage parking while supporting a large open space study. This tree house, really reside in the trees and offers a creative space replete with respite for the senses.
