Prior to the development surge on H Street, NE, Taurus saw the potential in this well-grounded neighborhood. Named after the famous African American artist Romary Bearden, the Bearden Arts Building became a mainstay of the neighborhood. The Taurus team established its headquarters in this original three story vacant building. With local eateries, Star and Shamrock and Bullfrog Bagels and the H Street Greenhouse (the second incubator space to open in DC), Taurus mapped a plan to build-out Bearden Arts, grow the Greenhouse and add residential space. Located just north of Massachusetts Avenue NW, our design/build team found the most effective way to join two lots and build a sustainable 9 story highrise. Residing atop the bluff that used to define the city of D.C. with the countryside surrounding it, this Mondrianesque glass building gives its residents a 180º view of downtown D.C.
As projects east of 16th street began to emerge, our team identified properties with a view to the park and to downtown. Like living in a treehouse, the spaces are expansive, light-filled, yet thoroughly private.
This tiny infill project on one of DC’s most private streets. Simplicity rules; through-floor units with every amenity provided.
These buildings had been abandoned and left to ruin. Our team came in and designed spaces that took advantage of the historic qualities of the townhouses, providing open, light-filled spaces for modern living.
Following the original consolidation of the Taurus design and development team, this project was a first of its kind. A contributing historic building within a historic district, it was given historic status with ownership benefits stretching into the future. The outside was maintained and brought back to its original beauty, while interiors were updated to provide lofts - before lofts were cool!
